How to play the guitar

Playing the guitar for the very first time can be extremely awkward for your body, because it isn’t really a natural position. For first timers and beginners it is important to remember that the guitar takes practice and you will not be able to simply pick up the guitar and play any song you would like. Even if you do everything suggested to you here, playing guitar still might and probably will, feel awkward but should not be painful in anyway.

The height of the chair is important choice in setting down and playing the guitar. So how do you know if the chair is the right height for you? when sitting down to play your guitar your knees should angle upwards slightly. Playing the guitar around the house it can sometimes be difficult to place your legs in the right position. To add some height to your knees place something sturdy under them or if this is not an option I would suggest trying to find a bar stool with a high foot rest. The reason we want this slight angle is because playing the guitar on your tiptoes can be extremely draining even after a short period of time.

Making sure when you play the guitar that your body position is correct is sometimes not always easy. before beginning to play the guitar ensure your back legs and arms are all in the correct position. If you do not keep your back straight you will find that you will hunch over the guitar looking at the frets you’re playing and may damage your back.

Place the guitar on your right knee, while the guitar is on your right knee place your left hand on the neck of the guitar. Keep in mind that the neck of the guitar should always be kept straight and angle upwards slowly as it gets further away from your body. If you’re having difficulty seeing the frets on the guitar, you can slightly tilt the neck of the guitar towards you so that you are able to see them.

The positioning of the fretting hand is really important, it is vital to put your left thumb halfway between the bottom of the guitar neck and the top. Once your thumb is there act as if you wanted to pick something up and close your hand with your fingertips pointing into the guitar. If you follow these simple tips you should be playing guitar comfortably in days for many years to come.
